Course Information
Description This course is an introduction to the fundamental concepts of financial accounting as prescribed by U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as applied to transactions and events that affect business organizations. Students will examine the procedures and systems to accumulate, analyze, measure, and record financial transactions. Students will use recorded financial information to prepare a balance sheet, income statement, statement of cash flows, and statement of shareholders' equity to communicate the business entity's results of operations and financial position to users of financial information who are external to the company. Students will study the nature of assets, liabilities, and owners' equity while learning to use reported financial information for purposes of making decisions about the company. Students will be exposed to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

Students will go to the book bundle link to get their code.  Then go find the Pearson link.  Once student has login/register - they'll be prompted for the access code.  On that same page, there is the option for temporary access.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Use basic accounting terminology and the assumptions, principles, and constraints of the accounting environment.  Measured by embedded questions in tests or quizzes and the assessment project.
  2. Identify the difference between accrual and cash basis accounting. Measured by embedded questions in tests or quizzes and the assessment project.
  3. Analyze and record business events in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).Measured by embedded questions in tests or quizzes and the assessment project.
  4. Prepare adjusting entries and close the general ledger. Measured by embedded questions in tests or quizzes and the assessment project.
  5. Prepare financial statements in an appropriate U.S. GAAP format, including the following: income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, and statement of shareholders' equity. Measured by embedded questions in tests or quizzes and the assessment project.
  6. Analyze and interpret financial statements using financial analysis techniques.  Measured by embedded questions in tests or quizzes and the assessment project.

Classroom:
Although this class is online instruction, all students are responsible for completing assignments and exams by the due date. Once a week a discussion topic will be posted in the Discussion Board.  Student is to respond to the topic.  Failure to do so will result in student making a 0 for that week for discussion board assignment. 
Discussion board grading:
Miss 1-2 weeks- 100
Miss 3 - 90
Miss 4 - 80
Miss 5 - 70
Miss 6 -60
Miss more than 6, 10 points will be taken off per miss week.

Exams: 
Students have 24 hours to take the exams.  All exams are timed. Once you open the exam, you are to complete the exam in one sitting.  Instructor will not reopen any exam unless there is an issue out of control of the student. (example: internet goes down, electric goes out)  If student fails to take the exam, their lowest exam grade will be placed for that exam grade. If student fails to take 2 exams, student will receive a zero. Student missing final will result in a zero. Exams will consist of problems from Pearson's Mylab. All exams must be completed between 12:01am -11:59pm on the day of the exam. 

Late Homework 
Homework and Quizzes are due by the due date in the Pearson Mylab. Students who need more time on an assignment, 25 points will be taken off per day late. .All assignments except Exams and Final are opened on January 16, 2024.  Students may work ahead of schedule but are required to do the discussion questions weekly no matter how far ahead they  work. Reopening assignments after they have closed, is up to the instructor. .  


Books:
Every student must have a copy of the required textbook or E-book as soon as the bookstore has it available.

Failure to follow instructions (written or oral) will result in penalties.

Instructor will put grades into Blackboard. Students should keep a record of their own grades and average. Instructors will not average grades for students.

Dishonest/Cheating:
1.  Any student caught cheating or lending their work to another student, both students will receive a zero on the assignment.  There is a difference between helping or showing someone how to do the problem and someone giving their assignment to a student to copy. 
 2.  Any student caught cheating on a test or final, will receive a "F" for the course.  


It is student's responsibility to check their email and blackboard ultra for any updates to class schedules or class work. 

Blackboard Issues:
Any log in, passwords, or software problems needs to be resolved by the IT department.  Please inform your instructor of any delays resulting for IT problems that can't be solved by class work deadlines.

Pearson Issues: If you have issues with Pearson, student is to call Pearson Tech support.  Please inform your instructor of any delays resulting with Pearson issues. 



Attendance Policy Students must sign into Blackboard at least once a week and email once a day in order to make sure no assignments have changed and to do the discussion questions.
